…through a door. Please give me a second to explain – it’s a great story, and it’s absolutely true.
A couple months before the end of the Steelers season, I took Lauren and her grandmother to the Springfield Grill near Seven Fields for a late dinner. As I was outside on the phone, I reached for the door, and was pushed aside by someone running through the door the opposite way. I thought in my head, “What a jerk,” only then to realize it was Ben Roethlisberger. Later that week, I told a friend the story, and he told me about an interview with Ben where the incident was referenced..
“Just a game. There’s no such thing to Roethlisberger, who is such a competitor that he rarely holds the door open for someone because he doesn’t want anyone — sometimes, even a date — beating him…” Full used to be read here.
Did you ever have one of those moments where you wish you would have reacted better? Yeah, that was it for me. I looked back and thought, “I could have beaten him…” After reading the article, I was fired up, determining that I’ll never lose walking through a door to Ben Roethlisberger again. Then it happened.
Lauren wanted to go to Bravo. I thought, “It’s not in our budget, but we’re running low on date-nights before the baby… Let’s go.” Dropping her off in the front entrance, I parked around the back, and walking around, I noticed someone who looked just like Ben Roethlisberger walking into the same restaurant. I looked closer. Thinking I was going to say something to him, he looked away. Now was my chance. He’s looking away… I never thought I’d really have the chance to beat him through a door again… His delay was my victory. I cut in front of him, and can now say that I’ve beaten Ben Roethlisberger… at something.
